COUNTRY JOE ON KMPX 1967 7/04
A rare aircheck of Country Joe live on KMPX highlights our newest batch of airchecks. Tom and Voco are also heard on this tape. Ron Middag has contributed two of his shows from 1973 & 1974. The finals of "Norman's Bigtime Bandstand" presented numerous 'unsigned' bands in 1974. Also added are several spots and promos from 73-74, a Lily Tomlin ID, a call from John Lennon, a live track from Bonnie Raitt and Metromedia's news wrap for the year 1974.
BIG DADDY 1969 6/04
The next batch of airchecks includes a Jive Radio appearance (taped) of Tom Donahue in 1969. This is an excellent show. Also posted are Jive Radio shows by Bonnie Simmons, Richard Gossett and Beverly Wilshire. We've also dug up an interview of Bernie Taupin c.1969, conducted by Larry Lee and Bonnie. Other goodies include KSAN airchecks by Bonnie and Norman Davis, and an ID from Marjoe. Scoop Nisker pops up with his newscast the day after the Sex Pistols came to town. We've also located part of the first Watergate Follies show and Tom's spots for the Pointer Sisters' album. Happy listening.
FINALLY! THE WATERGATE FOLLIES! 4/04
For some time we have been searching for tapes of one of the most creative and original programs ever produced by KSAN, The Watergate Follies. For more than six months in 1973 & 1974, this hour-long weekly special, produced by the Gnus Dept., covered the Watergate story with humor, satire, fantasy, interviews, commentary and music. We were having no lcuk until finally, a copy of the Watergate Follies #7 has shown up--now posted in Specials audio. This program focuses largely on John Dean's riveting testimony to the Senate committee investigating Watergate. We are diligently seeking other programs in this series.
MORE ANCIENT AUDIO TREASURES 4/04
Recent additions to our vault include airchecks of Bobby Cole on "Wasted Weekend", Tom Donahue, Tony Pigg, Bob Prescott and Stefan Ponek in 1969, Norman Davis in 1977; a rare Tom D interview with Muddy Waters; live performances by AC-DC, Camel, Earthquake, Journey, Eddie Money, Graham Parker, Ian Dury, Ronnie Montrose, and the New Riders of the Purple Sage; 1969 news broadcasts with Scoop Nisker and Bob Postle; spots, promos, IDs and the last, dying gasp of Jive 95, when Marshall Phillips read the announcement that KSAN was going country.
DUSTY'S LAST SHOW ON KSAN 9-13-03
Dusty Street had many memorable shows including her last night (in 1975?)
when the studio was full of friends, fans and co-workers. All four hours have
been added to the archives, along with two more Norman Davis airchecks from '76
& '77, station IDs from Tom Waits and Martin Mull, B.B. King & Ray
Charles singing for beer (see commercials), and more great live broadcasts
featuring, Tower Of Power, Linda Ronstadt, Tom Petty, Marshall Tucker, Les Dudek
and Cold Blood. Enjoy!
UPGRADED DR. HIP & MARGO TAPE 8-9-03
We've found better tapes of Dr. Hippocrates' infamous show and added them along with new air checks by Bob Prescott (11-5-68), Stefan Ponek (11-1-68), Norman Davis (5-29-74), a Nancy Newhouse break, an interview with James Vincent (1976), several news broadcasts from 1968, Raechel & McClay discussing 211 Sutter and a collage of Stefan Ponek at various S.F. stations.
FOUND: THE LOST DR. HIP SHOW 5-17-03
The most talked-about show ever broadcast on KSAN was a Dr. Hippocrates talk show with guest, Margo St. James. We have finally found a copy of part of this historic program. The audio is only fair as the only tapes made (apparently) of the show were the logger tapes. Also, the station's transmitter was messed up at the time and some of the program was only broadcast on one channel. Also added is a Tom Donahue show from April, 1969; McClay & Gossett in 1977; Sadle & Wilshire in 1975; a couple of Terry McGovern phone bits; the KSAN presentation in 1975; newscasts from 1969, 1974 and 1977; and highlights from the 1977 comedy special, "Keep Laughing."
AND NOW THE 10TH 4-8-03
Thanks to Diane Dibble we have obtained and added highlights of
the KSAN special, "What Was That?", presented on May 21, 1978 on the
10th anniversary of the Jive 95. Highlights include an aircheck of Tom Donahue
on KMPX in 1967. Tom also expounds on Grace Slick and The Great Society, his
psychedelic nightclub, the inception of KMPX, and the last Beatles concert.
Other participants in the 10th festivities include Ben Fong-Torres, Dusty
Street, Thom O'Hair, Raechel Donahue, Rick Sadle, Bonnie Simmons, Stefan Ponek,
Bobby Dale, Bob McClay, Katie Johnson, Bill Graham, Tony Pigg, Travus T. Hipp,
Milan Melvin, Alan Stone, Norman Davis, Terry McGovern, Richard Gossett,
J. Geils, Steve Martin and Michael Bloomfield.
A new page has been added to the "Specials" links for all these golden treasures.
RECENT ADDITIONS 3-7-03
Added to our growing list of live performances are: Boz Scaggs at the Oakland Paramount Theatre 3-10-74, another Hoodoo Rhythm Devils jam from 1975, a revised and better version of Fleetwood Mac, a great Little Feat live show 2-16-76, and the ever-popular Devo from The Old Waldorf 11-10-78. New airchecks include: Tony Pigg, Stefan Ponek, Bob Prescott and Bob Postle from 1968, and Norman Davis 11-27-76. We are pleased to add Tom Donahue's historic interview with John Lennon, a few spots and promos from 1968 and some candid remarks from Tom on how KMPX came to be, his nightclub, Mothers, and his opinion of Grace Slick and The Great Society.
AUDIO ADDS 1-18-03
Recent audio adds include airchecks of Alan Stone and Stefan Ponek in October 1968. These are mostly music but worth checking out. (Stefan plays six Judy Collins songs in a row.) Also airchecks of Norman and Terry in 1975 and Stephen Capen in 1980. The Hoodoo Rhythm Devil's long ID (which mentions everybody) and a couple of others are added to the IDs. In the interviews are 1977 sessions with UFO and The Rockets. The news department has some interview tapes with Scoop at a Consciousness Conference and at The Exorcist. In the odds and ends, you will find Thom O'Hair's classic T-Shirt promo and another promo for the morning show, also an odd collage of blimps, put together by Norman.
LATEST AUDIO 12-13-02
The Jive 95 audio treasure-trove adds the 1977 4th of July special, 201 YEARS TOO LATE, produced by Norman Davis, the KSAN COLLEGE OF KNOWLEDGE, a quiz show just like the old days with an organist, live audience and PRIZES, airchecks of Harry Shearer and Wolfman Jack and in the "Roots of KSAN" section, Bobby Mitchell on KYA in 1961.
In live performances, we have added shows from Commander Cody, David Bromberg, Kinky Friedman, Ry Cooder, the Sons Of Champlin, the Tubes, and a dynamite set by Nick Gravenites' short-lived band, Blue Gravy.
Also on-line is Warren Zircon's infamous "WEREWOLVES OF
KSAN" parody, Bonnie Simmons' COOKIE CONTEST with Famous Amos, interviews
with STRAWBS, MOTHER'S FINEST, news coverage of the INTERNATIONAL HOTEL EVICTION
in 1977, more unauthorized "replacement" spots for Clairol and Revlon,
Donna Campbell's singing telegram, and bits from Phil Buchanan, Terry McGovern
and Kent Skov of The L.A. Connection.
AUDIO ADDS 11-28-02
Now on-line for your listening and dancing pleasure is an aircheck of the KSAN COUNTRY CORNER, a short-lived audio adventure put together by Joe Lerer and Helen Cleland. "Billy" and "Rosie" interview the goose woman at the Cow Palace (priceless). Also recently posted: a 1973 special on Hitchhiking, a Phil Charles aircheck from 1974, Bob McClay interviews with Chill Wills, Cat Stevens and Randy Newman, Norman Davis interviews with Point Blank and Ayers Rock and Bonnie Simmons' interview with Cheech & Chong.
From the KSAN Gnus Dept. we are pleased to have Scoop Nisker's
DECADE IN YOUR EAR, a review of the serendipitous seventies, Four outstanding
characterizations by Daryl Henriques (don't miss Nixon tripping at a Be-In in
Golden Gate Park, it's one of the best things we ever broadcast), another Scoop
newscast from Thanksgiving 1977, a wonderful collage of the sixties, produced by
Roger Steffans, and various other relics from our outrageous past.
KSAN'S UNIQUE ART FORM -- THE STATION BREAKS 10-31-02
Thanks to Kate Ingram who provided us with two reels of the famous KSAN station IDs, we have posted a substantial collection on-line. Recently added are the original Dan Hicks, Oingo Boingo, Pointer Sisters, Gary Wright, Hoyt Axton, John Prine, and Old And In The Way jingles, the Pete Drake "talking steel guitar" sessions, the Mae West sessions, Dr. Hook, Dr. John, Country Joe, Commander Cody, Flo & Eddie, Bob Marley, Bill Graham, Billy Idol, Stiv Bators and many others.
MORE ADDS 10-31-02
The Sex Pistols infamous appearance at KSAN the day before their last performance is now up and staggering. Also in the interviews, a rare on-air appearance of God on the late late show, Norman Davis interviews the Danish group, Gasolin, and we now have audio for Tom Donahue's interview with Van Morrison in 1974.
Added airchecks include Alan Stone and Bob Prescott on the Jive 95 in 1968, Tom Donahue just before his wedding, Tony Pigg introing his show and talking to Bob Weir, Raechel Donahue on the morning show in 1974 (check the FNP collection), Norman Davis on Saturday night in 1974, Terry McGovern making 'Rude Awakening' phone calls in 1976 (before they were outlawed by the FCC).
The Gnus Dept is heard from too, with Scoop Nisker in 1968, Larry Lee in 1974 and two really weird newscasts featuring Terry McGovern, Joyce Shank and Norman Davis early in the morning. It's amazing what they got away with under the guise of news reporting.
Several commercials have been added, including two of the
infamous "Cover Spots" KSAN did for a while, (replacing bad agency
spots with our own---until we got caught.) (see: Archives for Rick Sadle's
story) These covers are for Revlon and Econocar. Also worth listening to again,
The extended Magnolia Thunderpussy spot--the announcer just couldn't stop
raving, and Ben Fong Torres' 1969 spot for Undulator Waterbeds. "Life is
just a waterbed," the perfect epitaph.
Live Performances have added a tape of Big Brother, recorded in 1967 and
presented on KSAN a few years later as part of a special "looking
back" program. Don Potoczak is the announcer.
In the Specials department, there's the sometimes amusing 1975 program, "1974--That Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful, Wonderful Year". Quite a few Jivers participated in this sardonic music, news and comedy special, produced by Norman Davis and starring Terry McGovern. In addition to the special, we've posted some of the outtakes and bits that weren't used.
Also up is the 1977 Rolling Stone Magazine special, "What A Long Strange Trip It's Been," written and narrated by Ben Fong Torres. This one-hour special is a brilliant retrospective of the first ten years of the psychedelic revolution.
On the Roots of KSAN page, you will now find a jingle, station breaks and an aircheck from KSAN-AM, the original KSAN, featuring ole' Jumpin' George Oxford back in the '50s. Also added are KMPX unscoped airchecks of Alan Stone and Bob Postal, plus numerous spots, promos, and excerpts. (see: Roots of KSAN)
In the Odds & Ends are several new station promos, including a session with Roky Erickson (check this out!), Terry's Opera promo is a hoot, likewise Raechel's 'Spam' promo. Also posted, some comments from Jay Hansen on his years at the Jive 95 and other accrual.
AUDIO ADDED 10-1-02
The Jive Radio audio collection is growing with recent adds of live performances by Nils Lofgren, Old And In The Way, Jimmy Buffett, Jesse Colin Young, It's A Beautiful Day, Elvin Bishop, Elvis Costello, Fleetwood Mac, Michael Bloomfield with Mark Naftalin, and Blondie. And the Hoodoo Rhythm Devils live show from 1977 has been remixed and sounds better.
Also new is the unique Tom Donahue tribute, "CITIZEN DONAHUE," which was put together by Judy Briscoe and Bob McClay, to play at Tom's 46th birthday party. It includes some x-rated language as Tom's old friends and acquaintances expound on their experiences and memories of the Great One. Find this under "Odds & Ends" on the "Real Jive" audio page, along with new station promos from Wildman Fischer and the Ramones.
